Meridian joins global ranks of sustainable companies

Meridian Energy has been named among the world’s most sustainable companies after being included in S&P’s Dow Jones Best-in-Class World Index – a global measure of corporate sustainability performance.

At a time when energy security, climate risk and trust in institutions are under growing global scrutiny, Meridian has been included in S&P Global’s Dow Jones Best‑in‑Class World Index, ranking in the top 10% of utilities worldwide – and is the only New Zealand company to achieve this distinction.

The Dow Jones Best‑in‑Class World Index is based on S&P Global’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment, an independent evaluation widely recognised in assessing organisational resilience, governance, risk management and the quality and transparency of environmental, social and governance disclosures.

“This recognition is about credibility,” says Claire Shaw, Meridian’s General Manager Sustainability. “In a volatile global environment, investors, governments and customers expect energy companies to be transparent, well governed and focused on long‑term outcomes. Being assessed in the top 10% globally shows Meridian stands up to that level of scrutiny.”

While global energy markets are grappling with climate impacts, infrastructure pressure and rising demand, Shaw says independent assessments play a vital role in separating substance from statements.

“People are skeptical of sustainability claims. That’s why independent benchmarks like this matter. They show how a company actually performs – how it navigates risk, reports openly, and manages the resources entrusted to it.”
